THE Black Boy statue in High Street has long been a symbol of Maitland.

The Mutual adopted it as one of its advertising logos in the 1970s and found that, through the simple and appealing statue, it conveyed effectively the concept that the society is truly Maitland's own.

The Black Boy featured in many advertisements and documents, including the society's own cheques up until July 2005.

It also proved to be a popular money box for many of the Mutual's members during this period.

Business development manager Greg Ferris said the statue was an interesting historic symbol of Maitland.

"The Mutual is a 120-year citizen of Maitland and the statue naturally forms a part of our history.

"The statue will be on display at the Mutual's head office throughout the remainder of the week as part of its 120-year celebrations."
