PUNTERS heading into Randwick through the infield car park will be greeted by a bronze statue of Hall Of Fame trainer Tommy Smith during the Easter Carnival.

The statue was unveiled yesterday as the build-up to Saturday's AJC Australian Derby continued with a trackwork session that was open to the public.

"The Australian Jockey Club is pleased to recognise the legend of TJ Smith with this magnificent statue, taking pride of place in the Royal Randwick infield," AJC chairman David Hall said.

"Tommy's contribution to the industry of racing and his place in history is unsurpassed and possibly never will be."

Smith won a record 34 Sydney trainers' premierships, a world record 279 Group One winners and was the father of trainer Gai Waterhouse.
